Chemical Process Equipment Materials

Case Overview

A chemical process equipment OEM building heat exchangers and reactors for chloride-rich and reducing-acid service had suffered from misidentified material: a previous supplier’s batch labeled “C-276” failed incoming PMI (Positive Material Identification), halting fabrication for two weeks. The OEM needed a supplier that could guarantee grade identity and document corrosion-related properties for each batch.

DZX qualified with PMI-verified batches and complete mill documentation: Hastelloy C-276 tube and plate for the most demanding sections, Incoloy 825 for moderate service and titanium for oxidizing conditions—all with chemistry, mechanical and corrosion-test documentation aligned to the OEM’s fabrication and inspection process.

This case summarizes the application requirements, materials supplied by DZX and delivery value. For case-specific technical data, please contact our engineering team.

Our Solution

The OEM’s fabrication process relied on three assurances that the previous supplier could not provide:

  • Grade identity: a mislabeled “C-276” batch failed incoming PMI and stopped fabrication. New supply had to pass PMI for every heat, every time.
  • Corrosion-related properties: heat-exchanger tubes for chloride service required documented chemistry (Mo and W content) and agreed corrosion-test evidence, beyond a generic mill certificate.
  • Fabrication consistency: tube-wall tolerances and surface condition had to be uniform enough for expansion and welding without rework.
Corrosion-resistant alloy tubes for chemical process equipment

DZX made grade verification part of the supply:

Every Hastelloy C-276 tube and plate batch underwent PMI chemistry verification, with Mo/W content documented for corrosion resistance. Incoloy 825 covered moderate chloride and sulfuric-acid service, while titanium served oxidizing environments. Tube wall thickness was held within standard tolerances for reliable expansion. Each batch included mill certificates and agreed corrosion-test documentation in the customer’s incoming-inspection format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every Hastelloy batch PMI-verified?

Yes. Every heat undergoes Positive Material Identification (XRF), with a PMI report and complete chemistry documentation supplied.

Can you provide corrosion-test documentation?

As agreed, batches include corrosion-test evidence to applicable standards or your specifications, with sample information recorded.

What tolerances are maintained for heat-exchanger fabrication tubes?

Tube wall thickness is held to ASTM tolerances (e.g. ASTM B622 for C-276), verified by batch ultrasonic inspection to support tube expansion without rework.

Can Hastelloy, Incoloy and titanium be combined in one order?

Yes. All three alloy families are produced under one quality system and can be delivered together with consistent documentation.
