Qualification of Gas-Turbine EGT Sensor and Hardware Materials

Case Overview

A turbine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) provider was rebuilding exhaust gas temperature (EGT) monitoring systems for industrial and aviation gas turbines. Its sensor supplier had failed a material traceability audit, while replacement sensors sourced from different heats showed measurable EMF drift that disrupted maintenance-interval decisions. DZX was invited to qualify a complete instrumentation materials package: thermocouple alloys, mineral-insulated cable and high-temperature fastener bar.

Qualification passed on the first attempt: EMF performance was verified to IEC 60584-1 Class 1, MI cable used dense MgO insulation for vibration service, and Inconel 718 fastener properties were verified against AMS 5662—all within one traceable quality system.

This case summarizes the application requirements, materials supplied by DZX and delivery value. For case-specific technical data, please contact our engineering team.

Our Solution

The customer had three mandatory requirements that its previous supplier could not meet together:

  • High-temperature EMF accuracy: EGT probes had to retain IEC 60584-1 Class 1 tolerance after prolonged exposure up to 1100°C. Drift directly affects turbine life calculations.
  • Vibration resistance: engine-mounted sensors face continuous vibration and thermal shock. Mineral-insulated cable requires dense oxide insulation without voids that allow conductor movement.
  • Full traceability: the customer audit required heat numbers, chemistry and test reports for every meter of wire and every fastener batch—a gap that had already disqualified one supplier.
Braided EGT temperature sensor assemblies for turbine instrumentation

DZX delivered the complete package through a single auditable supply source:

Thermocouple wire was drawn to IEC 60584-1 Class 1 with controlled chemistry for high-temperature EMF stability. Mineral-insulated cable used Inconel 625 or stainless-steel sheaths and dense MgO insulation, verified by sheath-integrity testing. Inconel 718 wire and bar were supplied in an age-hardened condition with mechanical properties meeting AMS 5662. Every batch included heat numbers, chemistry and test reports matched item by item to the customer’s audit checklist.
