Qualification of Appliance Heating Elements

Case Overview

An appliance OEM producing ovens, water heaters and small appliances faced field returns: heating elements failed prematurely or operated above design temperatures. The cause traced to uncontrolled resistance per meter in heating wire. Elements assembled from different batches produced power outside the design window, overloading the wire.

DZX qualified with NiCr and FeCrAl heating wire offering tight resistance-per-meter tolerances and documented life performance, restoring consistent output and substantially reducing field returns within two production cycles.

This case summarizes the application requirements, materials supplied by DZX and delivery value. For case-specific technical data, please contact our engineering team.

Our Solution

Field returns exposed three material issues the OEM needed to address:

  • Power variation: heating-wire resistance deviations exceeded ±6%, driving finished elements outside rated power limits and shortening wire life through overload.
  • Inconsistent element life: batch differences in surface condition and oxidation behavior made life-test failure times unpredictable.
  • Supply responsiveness: seasonal peaks required fast replenishment. The previous supplier could not guarantee schedules, forcing costly emergency purchases.
NiCr heating wire for appliance heating

DZX aligned heating-wire supply with the OEM’s quality and production systems:

NiCr and FeCrAl wire resistance per meter was controlled and verified by batch to keep finished elements within rated power limits. Diameter, surface condition and chemistry were recorded for every batch, and life-test data supported element qualification. Production was scheduled around seasonal peaks with confirmed lead times.
