Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the thermal stability interval of Hastelloy C-4? Why is it valued?

C-4 is an austenitic low carbon nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with excellent thermal stability from 650°C to 1040°C. Under standardized production processes, it can effectively prevent knife edge corrosion and sensitized corrosion in the welding heat-affected zone. It has extremely high resistance to intergranular corrosion and is suitable for equipment that still needs to maintain corrosion resistance after welding.

It has extremely high resistance to intergranular corrosion and is suitable for equipment that still needs to maintain corrosion resistance after welding.

Knife edge corrosion and heat-affected zone sensitized corrosion refer to corrosion forms that result in reduced corrosion resistance due to local structural changes after welding or thermal processing. C-4 uses low-carbon austenitic nickel-molybdenum-chromium composition with a titanium content of ≤0.7%. The page indicates that it has excellent thermal stability in the range of 650-1040°C. It can effectively prevent these two types of corrosion with standard processes.

C-4 has a density of 8.64g/cm³ and a melting point of 1350-1380℃; C-276 has a density of 8.9g/cm³ and a melting point of 1325-1370℃. C-4 is lighter, and the melting point range has moved upward as a whole, which is consistent with its composition design that does not contain tungsten and has a low upper limit of iron content.
